I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Associate who provides counseling to adults and couples. I see couples struggling with communication and intimacy, and adults facing challenges in their relationships and the difficult emotions that come with that.
With a background as a lawyer, I also frequently work with professionals in demanding careers and people dealing with the legal system through divorce and other disputes. I can empathize with the challenges of those situations and provide strategies for working through the stress and anxiety that they bring.
Areas of Specialization
- Couples counseling
- Adult survivors of childhood abuse, neglect, and sexual or domestic violence
- Relationship struggles
- Life transitions, particularly divorce and career change
I take holistic approach that considers both the person and surrounding influences from family, work, community, and culture. I understand the importance of confidentiality, and I work with each client toward achieving goals in a safe, non-judgmental environment. I believe counseling should go beyond insight and lead to solutions so that change can occur. Once you understand things, then what?
My approach integrates sensorimotor psychotherapy, internal family systems, and redecision therapy. I am also trained in EMDR and Level 1 certified in iRest—two treatment methods for trauma. My work with couples is greatly influenced by the pioneering research of Drs. John and Julie Gottman and Dr. Stan Tatkin.
I am originally from Houston but did my undergraduate work at the University of Notre Dame and lived in Chicago and New York City before returning to Texas. I landed in Austin to attend the University of Texas School of Law. During law school, I represented patients at the Austin State Hospital, the state’s oldest psychiatric hospital, in their commitment proceedings, and the seed for a career in the mental health field was planted. After working as a trial lawyer for several years, I earned my master’s degree in counseling from St. Edward’s University. I have completed 200 hours of hatha yoga training and am a devoted yoga practitioner.
I am supervised by Ron Artis, PhD, LPC, LMFT.
